British Expat Newsletter: July 2016

Hello, and welcome to those of you who have recently signed up.

This month

Our last newsletter came in the immediate wake of the Brexit vote. Since then, there’s been a frenzy of activity in party politics. We can’t resist the opportunity for a bit of smugness as we flagged Theresa May up as a possible future Tory leader and Prime Minister in our last newsletter sent just three days after the referendum.

Not that that’s much consolation. OK, at least we now have a government, if not an effective Opposition. But there’s still a good deal of “What happens now?” in people’s minds – and not only because Boris is now our Foreign Secretary.

For now, it’s looking as if people who have already settled in an EU country will probably be allowed to remain. Those who have made their move only recently may be in a more precarious situation. And we’re unlikely to get a definitive picture of what will happen to British expats in Europe (and EU expats in Britain) until well into the negotiations, which themselves aren’t likely to get under way for another five or six months yet.

Of course, it’s not just expats in the EU who were affected by the Brexit vote. Those expats who had sterling-based pensions and were hit by the pound’s slide relative to the dollar back in 2008 will be feeling the pinch even more now.

Debate about Brexit and its effects continues on the BE Forum, especially among our Malta members. You can join in that discussion here.

Meanwhile, of course, the Forum continues to provide information on a wide range of expat issues, as well as the opportunity to socialise with like-minded people all around the world. You can see the full range of discussion boards here.

As for our other content, we’ve got a new Quick Quiz for you. In the spirit of keeping calm and carrying on, we ask you to think back to the, er, Carry On series of films. How much do you know about Sid James, Joan Sims, Kenneth Williams and the rest of the gang?

And for no other reasons than they’re bright and cheerful and that there’s a tenuous link to times of economic uncertainty, our latest Pic of the Week is of a tulip farm somewhere. If you’ve got any idea where it might be, we’d love to hear your guess. It’s probably at least as good as ours!
